The weather has delayed the opening of the visitor season at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Skellig Michael (Sceilg Mhichíl) off the coast of Kerry.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed that the planned opening on Saturday, May 9th, was delayed due to weather and rescheduled to Tuesday, May 12th.
“Adverse weather and sea conditions over the weekend prevented the safe transfer of the OPW guide team to the island,” it has said.
Responding to complaints from Skellig boatmen about a lack of guides, the OPW said it “wishes to clarify that the island is fully resourced with a team of five guides on the roster for the season”.
“ A team of three guides live on the island at all times to provide essential safety and visitor services,”it said, and “the safety of our staff and visitors remains the absolute priority”. “The OPW regrets the short delay to the season and looks forward to welcoming visitors for the remainder of the summer,” it said.
