European short-sea operator giant Wilson ASA of Norway, whose dry-cargo vessels call to Irish ports, has seen their third new vessel out of 14 on order launched at a shipyard in India, writes Jehan Ashmore.
Wilson Eco III took to the waters at the shipyard of Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL) in Malpe, Udupi, in the district of Karnataka, which has a newbuilding programme that includes six 3,800 deadweight ton (dwt) and eight 6,300 dwt vessels. They will join the Bergen-based company, which has a fleet of around 140, which will be boosted with both series to be delivered between 2025 and 2028.
Designed with a focus on environmental benefits, flexibility, and efficiency, the Eco-series vessels will play an important role in reaching Wilson’s environmental targets. Wilson Eco III is equipped with diesel-electric propulsion and prepared for a wind-assisted system, which will future-proof it for upcoming innovations.
Eco Wilson III is to join the Bergen-based company, which has a fleet of around 140, which will be boosted with both series to be delivered between 2025 and 2028. In addition, they will renew the fleet, as Afloat previously reported, which ranges from 1,500 to 8,500 dwt.
The third newbuild of the 3,800 dwt general cargo vessel series at the South Asia yard was launched by Smt. Swaroopa T. K., IAS, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Udupi, on 6th September.
The launching ceremony was graced by Shri. Geir Ove Valheim, fleet manager of Dry Docks and Projects, Wilson ASA Norway, and officials from Wilson ASA Norway BV and UCSL.
