#Canoeing: Ireland’s Jenny Egan won the K1 5,000 metres at the first canoe sprint World Cup in Portugal today. The 30-year-old paddler had just .77 of a second to spare over Spain’s Estefania Fernandez after the long battle. Lizzie Broughton of Britain was third.

#Rowing: Ireland’s Aoife Casey and Margaret Cremen took a silver medal at the European Junior Rowing Championships today in Germany. The Skibbereen/Lee crew took second behind dominant crew Germany, and ahead of Italy, who took bronze. In a strong field, Denmark, the Czech Repbublic and Britain took the next three places. Ireland had the best last 500 metres, pushing up on Germany, but Italy came strong at the end to give the girls in green a small scare.

Casey, a daughter of Ireland coach Dominic, represented Ireland as a junior at the World Championships last year, while Cremen took a bronze medal at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in 2016.

Ireland’s three other crews placed in the top 10 to make it a very satisfactory campaign in Krefeld.

The Skibbereen/Lee combination were just .31 of a second off winners Denmark in their race and had the second-fastest time overall as they head into the A Final.

Three other crews – the men’s pair and quadruple and the women’s pair – finished outside the A Final places.

#Rowing: Ireland crews hit the mark at the European Junior Rowing Championships at Krefeld in Germany today. The Ireland double of Margaret Cremen of Lee and Aoife Casey of Skibbereen qualified directly for the semi-finals by finishing second in their heat, while the three others made their way through to semi-finals by the repechage route.

The Ireland women’s pair of Gill McGirr and Eliza O’Reilly won their repechage, while the men’s quadruple and pair took second in their reps.

Aaron Keogh of Three Castles won the junior 16 single sculls – first of 39 competitors and Jack Butler of Neptune was third of 28 in the junior 18 singles.

Cork took second in the women’s junior eight, while New Ross were third in the women’s junior quadruple.

#Rowing: Denise Walsh took silver for Ireland at the World Cup Regatta in Belgrade this morning. The Skibbereen woman, who had won her heat with a wonderful finish, came through the field to take second behind Patricia Merz of Switzerland. Merz had established a clear lead with a quarter of the race to go, and Walsh lay in fourth at this stage. But she upped her rate, moved into medal position and then passed Poland’s Joanna Dorociak to take a second medal for Ireland. The men’s lightweight pair had earlier taken gold.

“In the race, I focused on giving a bit of reserve toward the end and focusing on the sprint. I didn’t realize how close everyone was to me, especially Patricia. Now focusing on the European Champs in the single,” Walsh told worldrowing.com.

#Rowing: Ireland won the first gold medal of the World Cup Regatta in Belgrade this morning through an outstanding performance by Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll in the lightweight pair. They took on and beat the Britain crew of Joel Cassells and Sam Scrimgeour – who in a tight finish could not hold second and finished third behind Russia.

 O'Donovan told the official worldrowing site that they felt good during the race and gave credit to Dominic Casey, who is now the Ireland head coach. "Going forward we are going to a training camp in Varese and looking to implement new training and technique before Europeans.”

Cassells said: “We knew it was going to be a challenge. It was a pretty hard finish. The plan is to learn, the future is to get to the European Championships and retain the title.”

#Rowing: Irish clubs had some excellent placings on Saturday at the Ghent International May Regatta in Belgium. Commercial and Neptune finished first and second in the junior men’s eight and Commercial also finished second in the women’s junior eight and four, and second and third in the junior women’s pair. The Three Castles junior double of Rory Quinn and Oisin Clune took silver – second of 47 crews which competed. New Ross were the second-placed crew in the junior quadruple.

In the adult events, which generally had smaller entries, St Michael’s had wins through Declan O’Connor, Ben McKeon and Colm Garvey, while Skibbereen’s Orla Hayes won the lightweight women’s single. Sam McKeown of Queen’s University finished second to Dave Bell of Molesey in the senior single sculls.

#Rowing: The Ireland lightweight double scull of Paul and Gary O’Donovan won their semi-final at the World Cup Regatta in Belgrade today. In a race run in rainy conditions, the crews were closely-packed in the early part of the race, with Ireland taking a marginal lead by halfway. But then the O’Donovans moved and the race from there was about who would take second and third and join Ireland in the A Final. The Netherlands and Spain did the business to stay in the hunt for medals.

Britain’s Will Fletcher and Peter Chambers won the other semi-final in a fast time.

#Rowing: Sanita Puspure took second in the repechage and qualified for the A Final of the women’s single sculls at the World Cup Regatta in Belgrade today. The early leader was Victoria Thornley of Britain, and she did not relinquish the advantage. A battle developed behind her between Puspure and Tatsiana Kukhta of Belarus, which Puspure won. She moved in the third quarter and held a clear second place at the end.
