As Afloat reported on Budget day, Minister of State for Fisheries, Timmy Dooley TD, unveiled a significant funding package for the fisheries sector as part of Budget 2026.
The allocation totals €157.7 million aimed at enhancing capital infrastructure, supporting the Seafood Development Programme, and aiding marine agencies focused on sustainability.
Minister Dooley stated, “This funding will support key projects in our Fishery Harbour Centres and promote the economic sustainability of the seafood sector.”
He acknowledged the challenges posed by recent recommendations from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) regarding fish stocks crucial to Ireland. “The Department and the Government will work with the industry to find a pathway to long-term viability,” he added.
On infrastructure investments, Dooley noted, “Continuing investment in marine infrastructure is vital. This will improve harbour facilities and support our fishing fleet.”
Furthermore, he highlighted the Seafood Development Programme, confirming ongoing access to EU funds under the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF). “Vital funding supports to industry will continue to be available in 2026,” he concluded.
