EU Reinstates Tariffs on US Recreational Boats

12th March 2025

The European Union has announced the reinstatement of tariffs on US recreational boats, effective from 1 April 2025. This decision comes as a direct response to the US steel and aluminium tariffs declared by the US Administration back in February.

The measures will see the return of tariffs on various US products, including recreational boats, following the expiration of their suspension on 31 March," an EU spokesperson stated. The tariff list remains unchanged from 2018 and includes spirits, motorbikes, and other American goods.

While the EU plans to implement these tariffs at a higher level, it may also review additional US industrial and agricultural products for inclusion. "We are concerned about the impact on European importers and local boat builders, especially if the US retaliates," a representative commented.

An advocacy strategy is being prioritised, with the European Boating Industry (EBI) scheduled to meet with the EU negotiation team next week. Collaboration with the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and other affected sectors is ongoing.

European Boating Industry (EBI) strongly opposes these tariffs and highlights the potential risks to European businesses and the entire value chain. EBI urges both sides to engage in careful negotiations over the coming days and weeks to resolve this urgent issue. The imposition of retaliatory tariffs, as seen between 2018 and 2021, would have significant negative consequences, according to a statement.
