Seaman James Elliott has been named as the missing sailor who vanished off the north-west coast of Ireland at the weekend.
The 26-year-old from Northumberland was last seen at around 22:30 on Friday, 14 November, aboard RFA Tidesurge near Tory Island, County Donegal.
A large-scale, multi-agency search operation was launched in the early hours of Saturday after a distress call was issued to the Irish Coast Guard.
The search, involving the RNLI, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and Irish authorities, was called off on Sunday night after no trace was found.
First Sea Lord Sir Gwyn Jenkins confirmed the end of the search. “At this deeply upsetting time, my thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved in this tragedy,” he said.
RFA head Commodore Sam Shattock identified the sailor and paid tribute. “James has been serving as a member of RFA for almost 10 years. Our entire organisation feels the loss deeply.”
Tributes were also made in Parliament. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said, “My thoughts, and I’m sure the whole House, are with those that knew him, at this tragic and difficult time.”
Defence Secretary John Healey expressed sadness and thanked the search teams. “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the missing crew member has not been found.”
