A former Sea Cadet from Scarborough has been crowned Officer Trainee of the Year 2025 by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Alfie Allen, 20, received the award from Maritime Minister Keir Mather on 2 February at the UK Chamber of Shipping’s President’s Reception in London.
The honour recognises a Merchant Navy trainee who shows exceptional academic progress, leadership and professionalism.
Allen began his maritime journey aged 16 after a single email response to 20 inquiries he sent to shipping companies. A tour of a Hull-Rotterdam ferry solidified his interest. He later enrolled at South Shields Marine School, leaving home to pursue the dream.
“If you told me then that I would achieve this award, I wouldn’t have believed you,” said Allen. “To become a qualified officer already felt like a big achievement.”
He is set to join the Royal Fleet Auxiliary following his qualification for a UK Certificate of Competency in September 2025. His training has included time aboard a cruise ship, a Royal Navy patrol vessel, a container ship, and a buoy tender.
“Life at sea comes with challenges,” he said. “But it’s these experiences that make a seafarer.”
Minister Mather praised Allen’s dedication. “I congratulate Alfie on receiving the MCA’s Officer Trainee of the Year Award. His commitment is clear.” MCA Director Lars Lippuner called Allen’s story “inspirational,” adding: “It showcases the variety of options offered by a maritime career.”
UK Chamber of Shipping CEO Rhett Hatcher added: “Alfie’s professionalism and spirit drive our industry forward. We’re proud to recognise his achievements.”
Allen encouraged others to consider maritime work. “Shipping moves the majority of global trade, but the people behind it are often unseen,” he said. “I look forward to all the new ships, people and adventures this job will bring.”
