UK water safety agencies have launched a new campaign urging recreational boaters to prepare thoroughly before the start of the boating season.
HM Coastguard, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) are jointly promoting the message: “Reduce the risk, boost your skills”.
The campaign provides practical guidance for both new and experienced boaters preparing to head afloat.
Free laminated boating safety checklists are being distributed across the UK, including a Welsh-language version. The checklists cover vessel preparation, onboard equipment and crew readiness.
Advice includes discussing passage plans, reviewing man overboard procedures and checking engines and safety equipment before departure.
Boaters are also urged to nominate a second-in-command and ensure a reliable means of calling for help is available onboard.
Tom Barnett, Network Commander for HM Coastguard, said preparation is key to safe boating.
“As a boater myself, I recognise the importance of effective preparation and planning – it’s absolutely part of how boaters best equip themselves and others for a safe and enjoyable day out on the water,” he said.
Barnett added that the campaign’s checklists were designed to help skippers consider the safety of passengers and vessels before heading to sea.
“If you do get into trouble on the coast or at sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard,” he said.
RNLI Water Safety Delivery Manager Sarah Pennicard said preparation can reduce the likelihood and severity of incidents.
“We always want people to enjoy being on the coast, but things can quickly go wrong at sea. It’s so important to stay prepared,” she said.
“By keeping the essential checklists onboard, you’ll be reducing the risks of incidents occurring or increasing in severity.”
Richard Falk, RYA Director of Training, said the start of the season is also an opportunity for boaters to refresh their knowledge.
“Whatever your level of experience, even the shortest trip benefits from a little thought and preparation,” he said.
Falk encouraged boaters to consider refresher training through RYA courses or guidance from its boating handbooks.
