Five people were brought safely back to shore after their 9m motorboat suffered engine failure near the Saltee Islands on Monday afternoon.
Kilmore Quay RNLI launched its all-weather Tamar class lifeboat after the Irish Coast Guard requested assistance at 1.54pm. The vessel was reported adrift north of Great Saltee with five people on board.
The volunteer crew, led by Coxswain Aidan Bates, launched aboard RNLB Killarney and arrived on scene at 2.18pm. Conditions were favourable, with good visibility, a light Force 2-3 westerly breeze and slight seas.
After confirming that everyone aboard the disabled motorboat was safe and well, the lifeboat crew assessed the situation.
Given the vessel's position and loss of propulsion, the decision was made to establish a tow to the nearest suitable harbour.
The casualty vessel was brought safely back to Kilmore Quay, arriving at 2.50pm without further incident. Once the boat was secured, the RNLI crew returned to the marina and prepared the lifeboat for its next service.
Coxswain Aidan Bates praised the volunteer crew following the callout.
"We were very pleased that there was a successful outcome to today's call out," he said.
"Being able to respond so quickly is due to the equipment and training our volunteer crew receive. As a charity, the RNLI depends entirely on public generosity, which is why we're hoping there will be a big turnout for our annual Lifeboat Day this Bank Holiday Sunday, 2 August here in Kilmore Quay."
The annual Kilmore Quay RNLI Lifeboat Open Day will take place on Sunday, 2 August, from noon until 5pm at the marina.
The event will feature the station's lifeboat on display alongside stalls, games, entertainment and refreshments as the station raises funds to support its lifesaving service.
