The opening Preliminary Regatta of the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup will take place in Cagliari, Sardinia, from 21st to 24th May 2026. This marks the first time since the 2024 Barcelona series that all competing teams will race together in a high-stakes fleet racing format.
Over three days, 11 fleet races are scheduled, with four races on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd May, and three on Sunday 24th May. The top two teams will then face off in a winner-takes-all final.
Each syndicate is permitted to enter two AC40s—one for their core team and one crewed by Youth & Women sailors.
This format sets the stage for emerging talent to challenge the main crews. "It’s sure to happen," said event organisers. "There is new foiling talent everywhere, and they’re ready."
All racing will use the one-design AC40 class, ensuring that performance on the water—not technical innovation—determines results.
Fleet starts and close-quarter manoeuvres promise intense racing, with frequent position changes anticipated, echoing the excitement seen during the 37th America’s Cup build-up.
Cagliari is home to the Italian Challenger Luna Rossa and offers a testing but rewarding environment. The Bay of Cagliari is known for its dynamic sailing conditions.
Two racecourses, each around 2 km in radius, will be located close to shore for optimal spectator viewing.
On land, fans can enjoy the Race Village, with live screens, food, merchandising, and interactive experiences. The AC Viewing Promenade will stretch to the Lazaretto di Cagliari, offering panoramic views and sailing activities.
Teams are expected to arrive from 5th May, with unofficial practice starting from 16th May. The official practice and press conference take place on Thursday, 21st May, followed by a team presentation and village opening.
Cagliari’s Regatta kicks off the ‘Road to Naples 2027’—the next America’s Cup venue.
