A new Irish offshore contender has arrived on the east coast.
Frank Whelan’s Sydney GTS 43, now renamed El Syd, is in Greystones following delivery from the Mediterranean.
The yacht previously raced as Coin Coin in Croatia has undergone its final preparations, including a hull respray.
The Greystones Sailing Club campaign will build towards June’s Round Ireland Yacht Race with a full programme.
Planned outings include ISORA races, the Dun Laoghaire to Cork Race, Cork Week and Calves Week.
Rivals
El Syd joins a growing Round Ireland fleet that already features notable 43-foot rivals.
Géry Trentesaux’s Long Courrier and Johnnie Treanor’s Cristina are also entered.
Treanor's NMD design is more offshore orientated, lighter and consequently has a higher handicap compared to near sisterships, El Syd and Long Courier.
Trentesaux, a former Rolex Fastnet Race overall winner, confirmed his Wicklow start earlier this month.
His Long Courrier finished strongly in the 2025 Fastnet, racing in close company with Albator, now campaigned as Cristina.
Race tracker data from that event showed the trio frequently within sight offshore before Long Courrier secured victory on handicap.
The emerging line-up has prompted early expectations of a closely fought contest between the near-identical designs.
Whelan’s entry was lodged in February, with organisers continuing to update the fleet list ahead of the June start.
The Greystones crew is expected to include a mix of local sailors and experienced offshore names, as preparations intensify, including a first sail off Greystones for the crew this Saturday (March 28th).
