The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) has released an independent review of three incidents during the 2024 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The race resulted in two fatalities and a man overboard incident.
The CYCA Board has fully supported the recommendations made by the Review Committee. "We extend our sincere thanks to the Review Committee for their comprehensive and thoughtful work," said a CYCA spokesperson.
Key changes will be implemented, including requiring that 50% of a crew, including the person in charge, complete the qualifying race on their entered boat unless exceptional circumstances apply. Additionally, AIS man overboard devices will be mandated for Category 1 and 2 races.
The CYCA plans to record a Heavy Weather & Downwind Sailing Seminar before the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race. They will also review satellite communication requirements and publish an approved list of acceptable satellite phone systems.
Other initiatives include simplifying the race entry process with a new online portal and providing information to Australian Sailing to enhance the Sea Safety and Survival Course. The review committee noted that the use of helmets will remain optional.
