Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe will join the crew of LawConnect for the 80th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
Thorpe makes his offshore debut this afternoon in the Cabbage Tree Island Race, part of the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore.
LawConnect is chasing a third straight Line Honours win in the Sydney Hobart.
Thorpe, known globally as “The Thorpedo”, won nine Olympic medals across Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
He said the move into ocean racing opens a new challenge. “I’ve spent my life in and around water, but this is a completely different test, both mentally and physically,” he said.
He added that joining the crew offers a fresh opportunity. “It’s a chance to push myself, learn something new, and be part of an incredible Australian sporting tradition.”
LawConnect owner and skipper Christian Beck said Thorpe’s involvement adds a compelling dimension to the race. “Thorpie is one of Australia’s greatest athletes,” Beck said.
Beck noted the team’s aim to broaden the race’s appeal. “We want the Sydney to Hobart to be more accessible, which is why we introduced our livestream. Ian’s involvement helps make that even more possible.”
The Cabbage Tree Island Race is a 172-nautical-mile course that sends the fleet north to Cabbage Tree Island off Port Stephens before returning to Sydney.
The Line Honours winner is expected to finish within 24 hours.
Thorpe will return to the water next week for the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge on Tuesday.
