The historic yacht Solveig will headline the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Great Veterans Race on May 9. The Halvorsen 36 is one of the most iconic boats in Sydney Hobart history. She claimed Line Honours in 1953 and overall victory in 1954. More than 70 years on, Solveig remains active and will compete in Division 2 of the non-spinnaker pursuit race on Sydney Harbour.
The event is open to yachts launched before 1996 with a Sydney Hobart record. A fleet of 30 entries is expected this year. The course runs from Clark Island through the harbour to Sow and Pigs Reef, with multiple laps testing tactics and boat handling.
Current owners John Whitfield and Annie Lawrence acquired Solveig in 2019 and have continued her restoration. “We both have enormous pride in being associated with it,” Whitfield said. “It’s a maritime heritage registered boat.”
The yacht returned to the Sydney Hobart in 2021, finishing the race 67 years after her overall win. “It was a big moment because the Halvorsens have a lot of history in Australia,” Whitfield added.
Division 2 will also feature the Halvorsen 38 Anitra V and other classic designs, including Western Morning and Maris. The race will also honour the late Gordon Ingate OAM, who died aged 100. Competitors are invited to fly black ribbons in tribute.
Whitfield said the event remains special for participants. “It is a privilege to be part of history. We’re very fortunate.”
