The overseas prospect of ace helmsman Jamie McWilliam of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club would add extra spice to the Cruisers One division of Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta next July.
McWilliam is considering entering Ireland's biggest sailing regatta in his recently acquired BB10 one-design keelboat, Pelikanen.
Looking for all the world like a very large Etchells 22, the Cork Harbour ex-pat, a VDLR regular, has already competed at a Danish Championship in the two-tonner he nicknames 'Bibi Baskin'.
As regular Afloat readers know, McWilliam was on the podium at the 2024 Etchells Worlds in Fremantle last March, so he has top form in this long, thin keelboat type.
The BB 10 (also referred to as the BB10, BB-10 and BB 10 Meter) was designed by Børge Børresen and his son, Anders Børresen, as a one-design racer and first built in 1977 and is still in production.
Sailing with a crew of four or five, the potential entry would be a regatta first, with the yacht rating somewhere between a quarter tonner and a half tonner on IRC (0.938) and would provide some interesting competition for the half tonners, especially in a Dublin Bay breeze.
The BB10 has a fractional sloop rig, a spooned raked stem, a raised counter reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel. It displaces 2,248 kg and carries 1,225 kg of lead ballast.
