A Californian who was stranded in the Pacific for a month after his mast snapped has said he would go to sea again.
As Hawaii News Now reports, Kai Sato set off from the Californian coastal outcrop of Catalina Island on June 7th and aimed to sail across the Pacific solo.
He was two weeks into the 4,000km voyage when his mast snapped, and ran out of fuel for his engine. His phone also died and he was left drifting, with no apparent emergency beacon on board.
He told Hawaii News Now that he “cried for a whole week, just drifting south, like miserable”, before deciding to fix the sails using kayak paddles and PVC pipes.
It took a month for him to reach the shipping lane between California and Hawaii, living off oatmeal, fish and squid that landed on deck, and using condensation from buckets of sea water to try and keep hydrated.
He was rescued by a ship after a month at sea, and says he is planning his next adventure - a 12,000km sail to the Philippines from California.
