#DBSC –Dick Lovegrove's Rupert was the winner of today's DBSC Sigma 33 race. Royal St. George club mate Paddy Maguire on the helm of Gwili Two was second and A. Bell sailing Miss Behavin third. It was a spectacular afternoon for sailing with 15–knot north easterly breezes but unfortunately inshore, in Seapoint Bay, the dinghy fleet suffered a lack of wind and elsewhere it was decidely flukey.

There was a reduced turnout in Dublin Bay Sailing Club's cruiser divisions for today's racing with attention focused on results across the bay in Howth at the BMW ICRA Natinoals. The Dragon class was also diverted to the National Yacht Club's staging of the 18-boat east coast championships.

In a wind starved corner of Dublin Bay Hugh Sheehy's OK Dinghy won both races of the day, with a margin of two seconds in one and nearly a minute in the other. That puts the OK clearly in the lead of the Saturday series.

#DBSC – Jonathan and Chris Nicholson's Red Rhum made the most of the easterly winds and big seas for today's Dublin Bay Sailing Club race even though the veteran DB1 cruiser was chased hard by Mervyn Dyke's Jawesome J80 for IRC handicap honours. Red Rhum from the Royal St. George YC also took ECHO honours with Jim McCann's Mustang 30 Peridot second.

The one design divisions were reduced because the Royal Alfred's annual Baily Bowl competition for Squibs, Dragons and RS Elites is also being staged on Dublin Bay at the Royal St. George YC.

#DBSC – West north west winds ranging in strength from 9 knots to 20 brought Cruisers III Supernova (Shannon, Lawless, McCormack) its first wn of the Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC) season this afternoon winning all four divisions of the new Cruisers III set-up for 2012.

In a big turnout in all classes for the third Saturday of the season Dublin bay also played host to the SB20 East coast championships.

Quest sailed by Jonathan Skerritt (who won the April 28th race) was second in Cruisers III A division on IRC handicap to the Bay champion Supernova with Jerry O'Neill's Jammie Dodger third.

There was no ISORA fixture so some of the offshore crews were back racing on inshore courses but a J109 winner offshore Joker II had to be content with third in Cruisers one. The Cruisers one race was won by the brand new J109 Ruth skippered by Liam Shanahan of the National Yacht Club.

In the one design classes the Squibs appear to have survived last week's leeward mark grounding in the shallows off Seapoint. Vicent Delaney's Femme Fatale won from Perfection (Jill Fleming). Third was Nimble (Brian O'Hare).

The Half Ton Class was created by the Offshore Racing Council for boats within the racing band not exceeding 22'-0". The ORC decided that the rule should "....permit the development of seaworthy offshore racing yachts...The Council will endeavour to protect the majority of the existing IOR fleet from rapid obsolescence caused by ....developments which produce increased performance without corresponding changes in ratings..."

When first introduced the IOR rule was perfectly adequate for rating boats in existence at that time. However yacht designers naturally examined the rule to seize upon any advantage they could find, the most noticeable of which has been a reduction in displacement and a return to fractional rigs.

After 1993, when the IOR Mk.III rule reached it termination due to lack of people building new boats, the rule was replaced by the CHS (Channel) Handicap system which in turn developed into the IRC system now used.

The IRC handicap system operates by a secret formula which tries to develop boats which are 'Cruising type' of relatively heavy boats with good internal accommodation. It tends to penalise boats with excessive stability or excessive sail area.

Competitions

The most significant events for the Half Ton Class has been the annual Half Ton Cup which was sailed under the IOR rules until 1993. More recently this has been replaced with the Half Ton Classics Cup. The venue of the event moved from continent to continent with over-representation on French or British ports. In later years the event is held biennially. Initially, it was proposed to hold events in Ireland, Britain and France by rotation. However, it was the Belgians who took the ball and ran with it. The Class is now managed from Belgium.
