Local knowledge paid dividends on Thursday as Howth Yacht Club's Insider (Stephen Mullaney) took three straight race wins to end the first day of the Sigma 33 One Design National Championships at the top of the leaderboard.

The Championships began with three windward-leeward races sailed in fresh southwesterly conditions ranging from 16 to 22 knots.

After a short postponement to allow the breeze to settle, the fleet took to the water and delivered tight, tactical racing with close finishes — just seven seconds separated the top three boats.

Hot on the heels of Insider are Scottish visitors Griogair Whyte's Close Encounters from CYCA, who delivered a consistent day with 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place finishes to sit second overall.

Lying third after Day 1 is Leaky Roof 2 (Harper/Robertson), another strong Scottish campaign, with a 5th, 2nd, and 5th to their name.

With more races scheduled over the coming days, everything is still to play for in this fiercely contested championship.

Racing continues. Results below.
