The Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club (DMYC) on the town's West Pier held its Annual General Meeting on the last Thursday of November with a modest attendance of members.
Commodore, Derek Gill, Rear Commodore Sailing, Cormac Bradley, Boat House Captain, Denis Nolan and Honorary Secretary and Acting Honorary Treasurer, Kealan Guilfoyle each presented reports on the night, with the consensus that the club had enjoyed a successful year.
The Commodore made the point that, in common with other clubs, member involvement continues to present a challenge and reflected on the fact that the night's attendees were in essence, the same core of members who support all the activities at the club, be that Thursday evening talks over the winter or dinners and other social occasions over the summer. Post meeting it was observed that there were no members of the dinghy community of the club present.
From a racing perspective, the club had hosted two events, for the ILCAs and the Shipman 28s. In the case of the former, 60 ILCAs across the three rig sizes had enjoyed a six-race afternoon on a sunny Saturday in June, while the Shipman 28s had a four-race Nationals over a Friday evening and a DBSC Saturday in August.
The Fireballs visited the club for a coaching weekend that lost the Saturday on the water due to high winds, but made up for it on the Sunday and we closed off our season with the rebranded "Kish Challenge" which needed to be postponed by a week to get the race in. An initial entry of over fifty boats saw a big turnout on the scheduled day of the Challenge, but no wind attended so DMYC had to postpone by a week when a robust forecast reduced the fleet to twenty-one participants.
Shortly thereafter, we had a well-managed lift-out, with 41 boats lifted out of the water on a Saturday and the October Bank Holiday Monday. Denis Nolan was in charge of those exercises and also reported on the items of work that are needed to keep the Club operational from an on-the-water perspective.
Kealan Guilfoyle reported on the "business side of the club" and provided a balance sheet that recorded a very modest loss on the year's activities, influenced in part by monies that needed to be balanced out from the previous year's activities. From a secretarial perspective, the club's business has been addressed promptly and there were no outstanding issues to give cause for concern.
Election of Officers
With one exception and two changes of position, the 2024/25 Committee was returned with no counter proposals received within the prescribed time for such submissions.
- Commodore: Mr. Derek Gill
- Vice Commodore: Mr. Cormac Bradley
- Honorary Secretary: Mr. Kealan Guilfoyle
- Boat House Captain: Mr. Denis Nolan
- Slip Master: Mr. Frank Miller
Committee Members
- Ms. Cathy Booth
- Ms. Alyson Orr
- Mr. Kevin Woods.
At the conclusion of this section of the meeting, Commodore Derek Gill advised the meeting that there had been no nominations for Honorary Treasurer and asked the members present to let the committee know of any possible candidates for this important position. He noted that while Kealan had taken on the role of Acting Treasurer, it was important that we have a person who can taken it on as a sole assignment.
