Kinsale Yacht Club on Cork's southern coastline is returning to the format of pre-Covid years for its racing programme this season; Vice Commodore Anthony O'Neill has told members.

Its Fastnet Race will be held on alternative years with the Inishteraght Race, which will be run in the same year as the Round Ireland.

"These races, in addition to other coastal events, should provide more opportunity for those wishing to do some Coastal Racing."

Last week the annual meeting of SCORA, the South Coast Offshore Racing Association, also heard encouragement from its Commodore, Daragh Connolly, to boat owners and crews to get involved in coastal racing.

The first SCORA race of the season will be the Fastnet on May 23.

The early season Custom Rigging Frostbite League at Kinsale for Squibs is already underway at Kinsale YC, and other dinghy classes will be joining the League this Sunday, February 9.

This will be followed by the opening event for cruisers, the Frank Godsell March League, then the Axiom Private Clients Series and Cruiser and Keelboat Midweek/TGIF Series.

"All Championship Events and KYC Trophy Races are now scheduled, primarily, on weekends," the Vice Commodore says. "This marks a return to the format that existed in the pre-COVID years and provides a broad spectrum of events and dates that will hopefully suit most boat owners and crews. We have decided to run the KYC Fastnet Race on alternative years with our recently instituted Inishtearaght Race, which will be run in the same year as the Round Ireland Race. These races, in addition to the Daunt Race, the Horse Rock Trophy Race, the Race to Glandore and the Race to Baltimore should provide more opportunities for those wishing to do some Coastal Racing.

"The Major Myles Perry Know-Gore Trophy (for Cruisers only), the Bertoletti Trophy (Keelboat Classes) in memory of our former Club Manager Mario Bertoletti and the Spalpeen Trophy (Keelboat Classes) in memory of our former club colleague Billy Draper will be held on Wednesday and Friday nights."

A number of former club events are making a return to the calendar, Anthony O'Neill has announced: "The Bulman Pursuit Race, with its staggered start based on handicap, makes a welcome return on Saturday, August 23, as does the Craemer Stockford Trophy Race on July 12 and the Kinsale "At Home" on Sunday' September 7."

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.

Kinsale Yacht Club located in Kinsale, County Cork lies just 120 nautical miles from Wales, 240 from North West France and only 500 from the Galician Coast of North Spain.

Kinsale Yacht Club is only a few minutes walk from every shop, hotel, pub and restaurant in Ireland’s gourmet capital but most significantly it is only 30 km by road from Cork, Ireland’s second city, and between the two lies one the region’s main assets - Cork International Airport - with its daily links to many European capitals.

Club members, of which there are more than 600, race Cruisers, One Design Keelboats and Dinghies.

The club runs inshore and offshore races, has an active cruising scene, a powerboat section and most significantly for any real club, a strong and dynamic junior training programme.

Beyond the club’s own marina is the club house itself and the dinghy park. Within the clubhouse are changing rooms, bar and restaurant all with full wheelchair access. The club’s full-time secretariat, steward and marina manager are there to look after sailing visitors and members alike in a relaxed, informal and fun environment.

The club welcomes new members and has always got room on its members’ yachts for new comers to the sport.
