When you’re involved with the numerically largest club in Ireland, a prodigious amount of quiet work behind the scenes is needed to keep the show on the road. Howth Yacht Club may be one of the biggest employers on the Peninsula, but its smooth functioning could not continue – particularly in race management – without major input from skilled amateur volunteers with significant personal experience of taking part in races in addition to running them.
Harry Gallagher has such experience in this area that his talents are also drawn on by Dublin Bay Sailing Club. But in January the celebrations were very much north of the Liffey and Dublin Bay, as his efforts were rewarded by being Volunteer of the Year with Fingal Council, when HYC was also recognised as Fingal’s Sports Inclusion Club of the Year.
