It was J/109s all the way on Sunday in the first round the cans race of the AIB DBSC Turkey Shoot with John Maybury's Joker II taking the first gun on modified ECHO.

The sistership Dear Prudence was second and the 1720 sportsboat entry, The Conor K was third.

As Afloat reported previously, the race was a tonic for Dublin Bay sailors even though it didn't all go to plan for some crews.

The Royal Irish Yacht Club hosted fleet sailed in the northwest of the Bay and for the first time, there were five separate starts such is the range of boats now competing.

The second start of DBSC's AIB Turkey Shoot Series on Sunday will be the biggest, with 20 boats lining up for the first race of seven on Dublin Bay.

This year organisers are running five different starts for the 69-boat fleet that sees six 40-footers racing for the first time. As Afloat reported here, the fleet includes the past double winner Seamus Fitzpatrick's Mermaid V, a Beneteau 50-footer.

First to start on Sunday morning is a 19-boat fleet that includes the 2019 overall winner, Eleint, a Trapper 300.

In a change to the race officials for the 21st series, Henry Leonard, who has officiated at all the Turkey Shoots over the past 20 years, has retired, and Brian Mathews is replacing him.

 

Dublin Bay Sailing Club looks on course for its regular bumper turnout of 70 boats – or more – for its seven-race AIB sponsored Turkey Shoot Series starting in just under three weeks. 

The Bay Winter Series has consistently made an effort to include boats that do not usually race. Series organiser Fintan Cairns is reporting a 'good response' from cruising boats and one design among the largely cruiser-racer-based fleet this week.

There has been a healthy response across the Dun Laoghaire Harbour waterfront - and further afield too - with boats from the West Coast competing, including Sean Hawkshaw's Wardance of Sligo Yacht Club.

The fun Series that features short sharp racing has 35 confirmed entries so far, with 18 days to run before the first race on November 7th. 

The two regular Sunfast 3600s are entered, club 1720 sportsboats and ISORA competitor, A Plus, an Archambault 31.

A First 44.7, a J/112e are also entered at this stage plus there is the prospect of some new arrivals to the bay also joining the Series.

The Series of seven races will be held on Sunday mornings under modified ECHO handicap.

The AIB DBSC 2021 Summer Sailing Season annual prizegiving will be held this year in the National Maritime Museum on Friday, November 12th at 19.00hrs

It's a move away from the traditional club based event. Due to COVID, it follows on from the fact that DBSC was unable to hold its annual prize-giving last November. Three separate events were held in the waterfront clubs in June/July this year instead.

After a three-week race training programme during May and early June with great participation, the full racing programme started on June 8th which was six weeks earlier than last season, a bonus considering the difficult and uncertain circumstances. The club enjoyed great weather with only one day lost to strong winds – Saturday 7th August and only two Thursdays and one Wednesday lost to very light airs.

DBSC held 639 races over the season with 138 dinghy races on Tuesday and Saturdays, 17 Water Wag Races on Wednesdays and 445 keelboat races on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

With the ink still drying on September's final race results of the 2021 Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC) Summer season, the country's biggest yacht racing club has already unveiled its 2021/22 Winter AIB sponsored programme and Turkey Shoot Series.

A series of seven races will be held on Sunday mornings on the Bay under modified ECHO. Cruisers, cruising boats, one-designs and boats that do not normally race are very welcome.

The popular series can attract as many as 70 to 80 boats for the short sharp races and this year it will run from 7th November to 19^th December with First Gun each Sunday at 10.10 hrs.

The entry fee is €70 and includes temporary membership of DBSC and the Royal Irish Yacht Club at Dun Laoghaire Harbour who are hosting the series.

With the conclusion of Saturday racing at the weekend, Ireland's biggest sailing club brought the curtain down on its summer season in style, and overall results in all classes for the series are published below (subject to protest).

Dublin Bay Sailing Club members enjoyed warm sunny weather with a good breeze for the final Saturday race of the AIB DBSC Summer Sailing Season, with 121 boats racing over three race courses.

As regular Afloat readers will know, the DBSC Saturday season commenced with race training on four Saturdays in May, followed by 17 Saturdays of great racing during June, July, August and September. DBSC only lost one Saturday due to too much wind on August 7th, when racing was cancelled for all fleets.

Otherwise, many DBSC Saturdays had 'champagne sailing' conditions, including the final day on Saturday, September 25th.

"A team of 50+ volunteers including race officers, committee boat drivers, race management teams, patrol crews and mark layers all worked together to ensure that our members got an excellent standard of racing, sometimes in a very busy Dublin Bay when the three DBSC fleets shared the Bay with other events, DBSC Commodore Ann Kirwan told Afloat.

The Blue/Red fleet raced over 17 Saturdays with seven race starts from committee boat MacLir each race day for Cruisers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, B31.7s, Shipmans and Glens.

A total of 115 races were held, including three hut starts on the Saturday of the ICRA National Championships. DBSC PRO Ed Totterdell ran the majority of these races.

Patrick Burke's Prima Forte that made an instant impression by winning the best new yacht on the Bay in 2020 is in the prizes again this season, the First 40 from the Royal Irish Yacht Club winning the Cruiser 0 IRC prize on Saturdays. The second was clubmate George Sisk in the XP44; Wow. Third was Vincent Farrell's First 40.7 Tsunami from the National Yacht Club.

Colin Byrne's XP34 'Bon Exemple' has won overall in Cruiser 1 IRC from Royal Irish clubmate Tim and Richard Goodbody's J/109 White Mischief. Third was the National Yacht Club J109 Jalapeno (Barrington/Despard/O'Sullivan/O'Reilly). The J order was repeated in the Cruiser 1 J/109 division with White Mischief victorious and John and Brian Hall's Something Else from the National Yacht Club in third.

The National Yacht Club were tops in the 31.7 One Designs, with Chris Johnston's Prospect winning from RIYC's Attitude (T Milner/D Owens/J Sugar). Third was Johnston's clubmates Michael Leahy and John Power in Levante.

Royal St. George J/97 (Lindsay J. Casey and Denis Power) took the overall prize in Cruiser 2 IRC from Jim McCann's RIYC based Mustang 30 Peridot, a 2019 winner of DBSC's best handicap boat prize. Third, in IRC2 was the Royal St. George's Sigma 33 (Richard and Philip Lovegrove).

In the Cruiser 2 Sigma 33 division, the Lovegrove's were winners finishing ahead of Gwilli II (Dermot Clarke/Paddy Maguire) from the RSt.GYC. Third was Henry Leonard and Bobby Kerr's Leeuwin from the RIYC.

In Cruiser 3 IRC, Class Captain Kevin Byrne racing the Formula 28 Starlet, took overall honours from Myles Kelly's DMYC-based Senator, Maranda. Third was the September winner of the Cruisers III Championships held on the Bay; the Ken Lawless skippered Quarter Tonner, Cartoon from the RIYC. 

DBSC One Designs 

The Green fleet raced over 16 Saturdays with SB20s, Flying Fifteens, Sportsboats, Dragons, Ruffians, B211s, Mermaids and Squibs.

The Green fleet, run from committee boat Freebird, had a total of 180 Saturday races, the majority run by Race Officer Barry O'Neill. 

Justin Burke, Chris Helme and Alan Claffey from the National Yacht Club sailing So Blue were DBSC Saturday winners in the SB20 class. They took the overall prize ahead of Ger Dempsey's Venuesworld crew of the RIYC, who were runners up in this month's SB20 Nationals on Lough Ree. Colin Galavan and Richard Hayes from the RStGYC were third in Carpe Diem.

The Flying Fifteens were won by Ignis Caput II sailed by David Mulvin and Ronan Beirne of the National Yacht Club. The second was Ben Mulligan's Enfant de Marie with this year's Facet Trophy prize winner Niall Coleman sailing Flyer in third place.

On a trial basis, Sports Boats were also recorded using the VPRS handicap system. The winners were Vincent Latimore/Martin Ryan in the J70 with Ram Jam second and Mervyn Dyke and Basil in Jawesome III third. The results were the same in one design.

Dragon class victory went to ZinZan (Tim Carpenter, Adrian Masterson), who beat the Irish national champions Peter Bowring, Neil Hegarty and David Williams sailing Phantom. Third were Declan Hayes, Joey Mason and Chris Fleming in D-cision.

The Ruffian 23 Saturday top prize went to Michael Cutliffe's DMYC-moored Ruffles. Irish champion Bandit skippered by Ann Kirwan was second with Cutliffe's clubmate Frank Bradley in Ripples third.

The B211 One Design Saturday title went to  Jacqueline McStay/Hugh Kelly's Small Wonder. Second was James Conboy-Fischer skippered B211 Billy Whizz, and third was Royal Irish Commodore Pat Shannon in Beeswing.

Glencree 107 (John Bligh & Henry Roche) of the RStGYC

Richard O'Connor, Lucy Grant and Marcus Pearson in Glenluce won out against David Houlton's Glendun in Saturday Glen racing. Third was David and Roderick McCaffrey in Pterodactyl. 

DBSC Dinghies

The Dinghies had 16 Saturday race days with three starts in each and enjoyed two races most days, with three on one sunny Saturday in Scotsman's Bay. Race Officers Suzanne McGarry and Barbara Conway ran most of the 84 Saturday races for the dinghies.

Royal St. George's Brendan Foley took the overall win in an RS Aero while Finn sailor Richard Tate was second and Stephen Oram third.

Pierre Long's Dart won the IDRA 14s. Frank Hamilton's Dunmoanin was second, with John Fitzgerald/Jennifer Byrne sailing Doody in third. All three sail out of the DMYC.

As the Fireball fleet prepares to host the world championships on Lough Derg next year, the DMYC's Owen Sinnott sailing Probably produced a win over Paul ter Horst in second and Louise McKenna Royal St George's Pink Fire in third.

One hundred twenty-one boats turned out for the final races of the AIB Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC) Summer Series in a moderate ESE to SE breeze on the bay.

Patrick Burke's First 40 Prima Forte won the Cruisers Zero IRC class from the Royal Irish Yacht Club, while clubmate Colin Byrne was the Cruisers IRC One winner in the XP34 Bon Exemple. 

In Cruiser 2 IRC: Peridot, won from Dick Lovegroves' Sigma 33 Rupert. 

In the One Design classes, DBSC Commodore Ann Kirwan won the first race of the day in the Ruffian 23 class at the helm of Bandit, while Michael Cutliffe sailed Ruffles from the DMYC was the winner of the second.

In the dinghies, Ross O'Leary of the Royal St. George Yacht Club was the winner of both Laser Standard races, with Shirley Gilmore and Sean Craig shared victories in the two races of the Radial class.

Two days of sunny Dublin Bay perfection, with light easterlies on Saturday and an initially brisk westerly on Sunday, provided the notably sociable DBSC Cruisers 3 with an ideal launch pad for their new style championship, which produced an oven-ready event simply by combining the penultimate DBSC Saturday Race with the annual DMYC Kish Race on Sunday.

Almost all of the Class 3 fleet turned up for both races, and over two very different contests, there wasn't a single OCS, DNF, or DNC – it was a credit to the Class, and made for some great racing.

Saturday's DBSC race was on the cusp of being cancelled, but the RO wisely postponed for about 30 minutes and sure enough, a light breeze filled in, enough to stage a reasonable race around the bay. The course was wisely chosen so as not to interfere with the J/109 Championships which were being held in close proximity to the DBSC fleet. As the RO described it the conditions turned out to be champagne sailing, a light breeze of just 7kts and an almost flat sea. A great race ensued around 4 marks, ending at the MacLir finish line just outside the Harbour entrance.

Sunday's Kish Race was a stunning day out. Forty-one boats crossed the start line off the DBSC Hut, which is no mean feat in itself, and set off on a downwind run to the Kish Light. Conditions couldn't have been better with a 10kt apparent wind and just a slight sea, spinnakers set and many colours flying.

The Cruiser 3's were well up with the leaders and remained so all the way out to the Kish. Then there was a huge fleet split, some going northwest on a port tack up towards Howth, the remainder going southwest towards Killiney on a starboard tack, with both groups being heavily affected by a strong ebb tide, and there's still discussion as to which way paid best.

When the results were posted, there were clear winners in both IRC and ECHO. The Quarter Tonner Cartoon (Ken Lawless & Sybil McCormack) posted an impressive win on IRC on both Saturday and Sunday to take the overall prize, with the Formula 28 Starlet (Kevin Byrne) posting second overall and Maranda (Myles Keogh) coming in third. The ECHO prize was won emphatically by the vintage Beneteau First Papytoo (Frank Guilfoyle), followed by Eleint (Michal Matulka) in second with Cartoon emphasising the solidity of her performance by posting another podium place on third under ECHO.

It all made for a wonderful finale to the season with two days of cracking sailing and some great competition on the Bay. Class Captain Kevin Byrne issued a big thanks to DBSC, DMYC and Colin McMullen for all their help in staging the Championship, and especially to the skippers and crews for taking part to provide a great turnout with a solid showing of boats that augurs well for the future of Cruisers 3.

In the first race of the Cruiser Three Championships that include Dublin By Sailing Club's Saturday Series - and Sunday's Kish Race from the DMYC - the all-black Quarter Tonner Cartoon, skippered by Sybil McCormack and Ken Lawless won both DBSC's IRC and ECHO divisions today in light southerly breezes on Dublin Bay.

Second on IRC was the Formula 28 Starlet with the Trapper Eleint in third place. 

Eleint took second on ECHO with Papytoo third.

Patrick Burke's First 40 Prima Forte was the Cruisers Zero race winner in Saturday's DBSC Cruiser 0 IRC race on Dublin Bay.

The Royal Irish yacht beat Vincent Farrell's Frist 40.7 Tsunami from the National Yacht Club. George Sisk's XP44 Wow was third. 

In advance of next weekend's Cruiser III championships – and a possible indication of form – Cartoon won the DBSC Cruiser 3 IRC division ahead of Starlet in second and Maranda in third.
