Nine Dun Laoghaire sailors have arrived in western Ukraine with ambulances and medical supplies as part of Mighty Convoy #22.
The volunteer drivers and team include Peter Bowring, David Crawford, Derek Ryan, Frank O’Beirne, Kieron Guilfoyle, David Sommerville, David Kelly, Justin McKenna and organiser David Williams.
As reported on the initiative's GoFundMe page, the group travelled overland to Lviv with three ambulances and three Ford Ranger 4x4s, all loaded with medical aid.
“With your help, we have collectively raised over €40,000 to purchase five vehicles,” Williams said before departure.
Mighty Convoy, founded in 2022 by Simon Brake, raises funds to buy and deliver second-hand ambulances and 4x4 vehicles for casualty transport.
Since its launch, the initiative has organised 17 previous convoys and delivered 75 vehicles to Ukraine.
Each ambulance costs approximately €8,000 to purchase and deliver.
“The need for ambulances and medical aid has never been greater,” Williams said.
Mighty Convoy dispatches a convoy roughly every four weeks and is continuing to raise funds for vehicles.
