Council tender covers seabed investigations for harbour dredging and ground investigations for the proposed National Watersports Campus
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is seeking contractors to carry out seabed and ground investigations at Dún Laoghaire Harbour as part of preparations for future harbour dredging and the proposed National Watersports Campus.
The council's tender, published on 17 September, covers two separate packages of geotechnical investigation work, with a deadline of 5pm today, Thursday, 8 October, for submissions.
The investigations will provide information about seabed and ground conditions to inform the planning and design of both projects.
Seabed Surveys for Harbour Dredging
The first package involves marine ground investigations associated with proposed dredging within Dún Laoghaire Harbour.
It includes vibrocoring at four specified locations, with provision for investigations at up to six additional locations if required.
Vibrocoring uses vibration to recover sediment cores from the seabed, allowing engineers to examine the composition and characteristics of material that may need to be dredged.
The work also includes seabed sampling, geological logging, environmental laboratory testing and three types of marine survey: multibeam echo sounding, side-scan sonar and magnetometer surveys.
These techniques can provide detailed information about seabed depths, surface features and potential buried metallic objects.
The proposed work forms part of preparations for future harbour dredging, a subject covered in Afloat's Dredging section.
Ground Investigations for Watersports Campus
The second package concerns the proposed National Watersports Campus, a major element of the council's plans for the future development of Dún Laoghaire Harbour.
This work combines land-based and over-water investigations, including boreholes, rotary coring, standard penetration testing, cone penetration testing, vibrocoring and trial pits.
Additional investigations will cover groundwater, ground gases, drainage infiltration and environmental waste classification.
The tender also requires the surveying of investigation locations and the preparation of laboratory results and factual ground investigation reports.
The proposed campus is intended to provide improved watersports facilities.
