Donegal Fine Gael councillor Manus Boyle has added his voice to this week's call for a total ban on Norwegian fishing vessels in Irish waters.
Cllr Boyle says he is "standing united with Irish fishing representatives in the fight to protect the country’s fishing industry".
A call to ban Norway from Irish waters was issued this week by Irish Fish Producers' Organisation chief executive Aodh O Donnell.
Cllr Boyle has expressed alarm over the disparity in quotas, highlighting that Norwegian vessels are permitted to catch more than three times the amount of blue whiting in Irish waters than Irish fishermen are allowed.
Norwegian "armadas" are "sweeping up fish stocks while Irish vessels remain idle due to limited quotas", he said.
Cllr Boyle emphasised that Irish fishermen are being forced to watch from their ports as foreign vessels deplete the fish stocks in Irish waters.
He said he has "actively lobbied ministers, MEPs, and both the current and previous Taoiseach, urging them to address what he views as a grossly unfair situation that threatens the future of Ireland’s fishing industry".
He has called for immediate government intervention, warning that without decisive action, fish stocks will be exhausted under the current quotas, leading to the collapse of the industry.
"Hard decisions" must be made by the government to ensure the survival of this vital sector and protect Ireland’s natural marine resources, he said.
