A proposed income stabilisation and climate compensation scheme for the Irish inshore fishing fleet will be discussed by members of the Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs today (Feb 10).
Representatives from the National Inshore Fishermen’s Association (NIFA) will outline the proposal which they have already submitted to Government.
Ahead of the meeting at 11 am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House, committee cathaoirleach Conor McGuinness gave the background to the detailed proposal for inshore fishing communities.
“Citing pressures on the sector from rising costs for fuel, insurance, maintenance and bait, market volatility and reduced fishing days due to climate, the proposal includes an annual basic income stabilisation payment and a climate change compensation fund, both backdated to 2020,” he said.
“Other ideas include reopening salmon, seabass and trout fisheries for small vessels only and a larger pelagic quota for inshore vessels,” he said.
“The committee welcomes this engagement with representatives from NIFA and looks forward to discussing their proposal and ideas for supporting and stabilising the inshore fishing sector, as well existing and proposed Government supports, and related matters.”
The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
