Irishman Michael Finn has been elected deputy chair of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) administrative board.
The new EFCA chair is Kestutis Sadauskas, who is European Commission Deputy Director General in DG MARE.
EFCA Leadership Changes
Mr Finn has been an EFCA administrative board member. Both positions were approved at a meeting on April 23rd in Vigo, Spain, and will run until October 2029.
The EFCA’s executive director is Dr Susan Steele, from Ireland, and her mandate was renewed last October until 2031.
At the Vigo meeting, the EFCA administrative board also adopted the agency’s annual report, reflecting the key activities carried out in 2025.
Some 99% of the agency’s annual work programme, the meeting heard.
“This high level of implementation was supported by a budget execution rate of 100%, confirming EFCA’s continued commitment to efficiency and sound financial management,”it said.
“Throughout the year, EFCA continued to work closely with the EU member states and the European Commission, providing operational assistance in the coordination of fisheries control and inspection activities,”it said.
As Afloat reported recently, enforcement remains under scrutiny, with studies highlighting the environmental and economic cost of practices such as bottom trawling.
“This included support for the deployment of national inspection means and the reporting of fisheries control information,”it said.
The EFCA said it also “contributed to the harmonised and uniform application of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), the development of control and inspection methodologies, the coordination of training for inspectors, and the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing”.
“In addition, the agency further strengthened European Coast Guard cooperation with other EU agencies and supported the Commission in the implementation of relevant legislative acts and continued to prepare and implement projects related to fisheries control,”it said.
