Planning permission to extend the capacity of Galway Bay’s Mutton Island wastewater treatment plant has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
An Taisce’s Galway branch has said that although the plan needs an upgrade, the proposed plan is not sufficient due to the regular wastewater discharges into the bay.
In August, Galway City Council gave conditional approval to Uisce Éireann to install a 949 cubic metre storage tank at Merlin Park.
The local authority had given permission for a similar waste water tank last year, but Uisce Éireann then withdrew that application after An Taisce appealed it to An Bord Pleanála.
An Taisce has called on An Bord Pleanála to seek calculations from Uisce Éireann that would support its claim that capacity for 25 years of projected population growth is provided for in its plan.
“What is proposed in this application, while it may be a small improvement of sorts, is not of the scale required to enable Galway to achieve its National Planning Framework population target by 2040, “An Taisce says.
Meanwhile, Uisce Éireann has initiated an eight-week public consultation on a long-term plan for wastewater services for Galway City and parts of Galway County.
The Draft Galway Wastewater Strategy will consider the capacity of existing wastewater infrastructure and will identify options for upgrading and building new wastewater infrastructure up to 2080, Uisce Éireann says.
