Hidden tales of the “dark shore” is the theme of a family-friendly day out this coming Saturday at Ladies Beach, Salthill, Galway.
The free event from 10 am on Saturday, October 18th, aims to take a Hallowe’en theme by exploring “ancient fossils, hidden monsters, dark tales, and the incredibly rare Hag Stone,” the organisers say.
“This experience is all about exploring, discovering, learning and maybe finding some magic along the shore,” they say.

During the walk, the Galway City Museum and Galway Atlantaquaria will share some short stories of ancient marine tales, and participants will be tasked to create their own small ‘merrow’ on the shore as part of the activity.
The experience will also include an “Explore Your Shore” activity, where there will be a search for anemones and other biodiversity that can be found in the rockpools of Salthill.
Garry Kendellen of Galway Atlantaquaria said, “I have often walked the shores of Salthill and discovered a whole host of monsters, from the species that feed on the dead, to ones that dig their own grave in stone, I have even witnessed shells that drill into the heads of limpets…you can look at the science, but there is some darkness along the shores, so I do hope we can find a Hag Stone to keep us safe from Salthill’s dark shores.”

“The Dark Shores of Salthill is all about celebrating our marine environment and honouring myths that are an integral part of Irish culture.”
