"A marine protected area for Galway Bay” is the theme of a talk which environmental organisation Corrib Beo is hosting in the Galway City Museum later this month.
The lunchtime talk will be given by Pádraic Fogarty, an ecologist and author with Openfield Ecological Services.
Fogarty will speak about how marine life and traditional fishing could be revitalised by the creation of a marine protected area in the bay.
Currently, Irish legislation provides for the protection of marine species, habitats, and ecosystems only within 12 nautical miles of the coast, primarily under the Wildlife Acts.
Beyond this limit, some protections are afforded through EU law—specifically the Birds Directive, the Habitats Directive, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive—which have been transposed into Irish law.
Proposed legislation was published in December 2022 on a dedicated mechanism for the spatial designation and management of marine protected areas in Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
The talk takes place on Wednesday, October 29th at 1:00 pm in the Galway City Museum, and booking is recommended on Eventbrite at this link here
