Circus Science by the Sea, said to be Europe’s only festival of this type, takes place on Mayo’s Achill Island, and in Westport and Mulranny later this week.
A multimedia show entitled “Achill Island, Basking Shark Fishermen” is one of the programme highlights.
It explores Achill’s changing relationship with basking sharks. The performance will be followed by a special conversation with the artists and shark experts.
Achill Island, Basking Shark Fishermen” explores Achill’s changing relationship with basking sharks, offering a unique perspective on these magnificent creatures and their connection to the local community
The festival from November 14th to 16th promises “three days of circus fun with a scientific twist”.
Now in its third year, the event produced by Circus250 and supported by Research Ireland combines the “wonder of circus with the curiosity of science, inspiring audiences to laugh, learn and look at the world differently”, organisers say.
The festival will open with what is described as “a dazzling fire performance and celebratory fizz at The Valley House, Achill, setting the tone for an unforgettable weekend of creativity, curiosity and community”.
Among other highlights on the programme is The Drop Science Bubble Show, a world premiere from Ireland’s first certified bubbleologist.
This blends science and spectacle to reveal how simple drops of water can create magical, mesmerising worlds of bubbles.
Two Circus Science Cabarets bring together “eye-popping circus skills and jaw-dropping scientific wonder”.
Audiences can expect acrobatics, clowning, live music, playful “egg-speriments” and plenty of surprises along the way.
New for 2025 is the Science Stamp Trail, inviting young festivalgoers to collect stamps at events throughout the weekend and exchange them for small prizes - a fun and interactive way to explore, learn and take part in the festival.
Both The Drop Science Bubble Show and “Achill Island Basking Shark Fishermen” will be interpreted in Irish sign language, ensuring that more families can enjoy the magic of circus and science together.
Festival Director Dea Birkett says: “Circus Science by the Sea is about joy, curiosity and connection. We want audiences of all ages to leave inspired, not just by science, but by how creativity and community can make us see the world in a new way.”
