This year’s annual and Ireland’s only Blackberry Festival (18-19 September) takes place on Inis Meáin (‘middle island’) of the Aran Islands archipelago in Galway Bay, writes Jehan Ashmore.
Féile na bPuiteachaí brings together islanders and ferry visitors alike for a fun-filled weekend of local food, craft, creative arts, sports, and family competitions.
The free-of-admission two-day biliterate event (Irish & English) is a vibrant community celebration of the blackberry (puiteachaí—also sméara dubha) harvest yielded on Inis Meáin. The island, which is the least visited of the three Aran Islands, is the quietest and most traditional of the islands but is easily accessible, as Afloat examined the ferry scene during this shoulder season month.
Inis Meáin can be reached by a (50-minute) ferry from Rossaveel in Connemara, where the harbour, is 37 km (23 miles) west of Galway city centre. The operator is Aran Island Ferries, which includes a shuttle bus transfer service between Galway and Rossaveel Pier.
For those who have more leisurely time, a limited (25-minute) ferry service is also available from Doolin, Co. Clare, run by the Doolin Ferry Company, as this month’s only scheduled sailing is Saturday, 26 September, whereby the return sailing from Inis Meáin pier passes the smallest of the Arans, Inis Oirr, before arriving at Doolin.
As for more on the festival, it features a market with local crafts, artisanal food, and artwork (Ceardaíocht, Bia agus Ealaín), and those feeling energetic can take A Park Run (na bPuiteachaí) on the scenic island run for all fitness levels.
There’s the Blackberry Art (Ealaín le Puiteachaí), where creative arts and crafts workshops use the local blackberries.
What about joining in the competition to find the island’s biggest potato (Comórtas Fata is Mó) or getting involved in the cocktail & mocktail making workshop (Ceardlann Manglam).
Better still, show off your best blackberry bakes at the Blackberry Baking Competition (Comórtas Bácála) by entering your finest creation into the Comórtas Bácála Fhéile na bPuiteachaí 2026 for a chance to win fantastic prizes.
