US Sailing has launched the US Sailing Scholarship Fund. This initiative aims to make sailing more accessible for everyone.

The fund provides financial assistance for training, certifications, and competitions. It specifically targets individuals facing financial barriers to participation.

“The scholarship fund was created in response to feedback from the sailing community,” said Jess Haverstock, Major Gifts Officer. She noted that many aspiring sailors struggle with costs associated with training.

Eligible expenses include entry fees for regattas and costs for courses like Safety at Sea. Scholarship amounts range from $50 to $750 depending on the programme.

Haverstock emphasised the long-term vision for the fund. “We aim to create lasting change where passion, not financial means, drives participation in sailing.”

Currently, the fund is in its foundational phase. The priority is to raise awareness and gather contributions for future support.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
