The Irish Coast Guard is wrapping up a rescue operation for 12 crew members off the south-west coast of Cork. The operation is taking place approximately 53 nautical miles south-west of Dursey Head.
At just before 6am, Valentia Coast Guard received a MAYDAY call from the fishing vessel, ‘Radoche Tercero’, which was reportedly taking on water. The Coast Guard swiftly issued a MAYDAY relay to all nearby shipping.
Resources deployed included the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter R115, the Coast Guard fixed-wing aircraft 120F, the Castletownbere RNLI lifeboat, and the Baltimore RNLI lifeboat.

All crew members evacuated to a life raft and were initially rescued by the fishing vessel ‘Punteareas Uno’. They are currently being escorted back to safety by the Castletownbere lifeboat.
Fortunately, the rescued crew members were unharmed and did not require medical attention. They are expected to arrive at the pier in Castletownbere around 3.30 pm.
RNLI adds: Castletownbere RNLI launched their lifeboat under Coxswain Willie Power with four crew members onboard while Baltimore RNLI launched their lifeboat under Coxswain Aidan Bushe with six crew onboard.
Weather conditions at the time were described as fair with a 2m ground swell.
Before Castletownbere RNLI arrived on scene just after 9am, the crew received an update that the 12 people onboard had abandoned their vessel and taken to their life raft. They were then picked up by another fishing vessel that was in the area at the time.
Baltimore RNLI’s lifeboat was stood down while Castletownbere RNLI was requested to recover the EPIRB. The Castletownbere lifeboat crew arrived back to the station at 1pm.
Speaking following the call out, Brian O’Driscoll, Castletownbere RNLI Launch Authority said: ‘We would like to commend the fishing crew for taking the right precautions in having a means of communication and for raising the alarm when they knew they were in difficulty. We would like to commend the crew of the other fishing vessel who came to their aid and thank our colleagues in the Irish Coast Guard.
‘This was the first call out for crew member Willie Power in his role as Coxswain and the first call out for crew member Sean O’Shea. It was an early call and a seven hour shout and we would like to thank and commend all involved.’
