Tributes have been paid to Irish Coast Guard officer and Clare firefighter James Lucey who died last week.
Members of fire services in Ireland and Britain, along with representatives of Coast Guard units around the coastline, have expressed their sympathies.
In a statement, the Irish Coast Guard Kilkee unit said it “would like to express our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of our volunteer James Lucey - Assistant Officer In Charge”.
“James served as a volunteer with the Irish Coast Guard for over 22 years in Kilkee and held numerous positions during his service including Coxswain and Officer in Charge,”it said.
“Beyond his Coast Guard service, James was a retained firefighter approaching 20 years’ service with Kilkee Fire Brigade,”it said.
“On behalf of the Irish Coast Guard, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Ann, sons Sam and Patrick, daughter Lauren, and his extended family.”
Niall Ferns, Irish Coast Guard preparedness, response and planning manager, said on rip.ie that “you will be remembered for your dedication as a Coast Guard and for all you did for your unit in Kilkee”.
Clare County Fire and Rescue Service's headquarters in Ennis closed from 11am to 3pm on Monday, March 2, as a mark of respect to their late colleague and friend.
His funeral took place at Kilkee Church on Monday, March 2nd, followed by a cremation service at Shannon Crematorium.
