Bangor RNLI volunteers were called to action on Monday morning. At 8.49 am, Belfast Coastguard alerted them about a kite surfer in difficulty in Ballyholme Bay.
Bangor lifeboat Ruby Robinson launched at 9.00 am, reaching the scene quickly. They found the surfer exhausted in the water and unable to remount his board.
The crew brought him onboard and retrieved his equipment. They coordinated with HM Coastguard and decided to bring the surfer ashore for care.
After safely handing him over to the Coastguard shore team, the lifeboat returned to station at 10.05 am. Jason and Vicky Clarke welcomed the Ruby Robinson back. They are relatives of Deis Filby, the lifeboat's donor, and had witnessed the rescue.
Bangor lifeboat helm James Gillespie commented, “We had a good outcome this morning. We thank the member of the public who alerted us.” He also advised, “It is always better to kite with another person and never to ride out further than you can swim back.”
