Achill Island RNLI in County Mayo launched a rescue operation at Annagh Beach on Saturday, 23 August, after a man was reported in difficulty. The Irish Coast Guard requested assistance shortly after 3.30pm.
Annagh Beach, located on the island’s north side, is inaccessible by road. To provide support, the Achill Coast Guard unit and the Sligo-based helicopter Rescue 118 were also dispatched.
The lifeboat 'Sam and Ada Moody' set off with a crew of seven. The boat launched approximately 2 hours before high water, navigating past Keel Beach and around Achill Head.
Upon arrival, the casualty, accompanied by his wife and friends, had received initial assistance from a local doctor. A decision was made to transfer them to the lifeboat.
Once on board, the man was reassessed by the volunteer crew, who provided casualty care. The return journey faced 1-metre swells, requiring the crew to adjust their speed for safety.
The National Ambulance Service met the lifeboat at Cé Bheag pier around 6.30 pm. The man was then transferred to an ambulance for further medical assessment.
Eilish Power of Achill Island RNLI stated, “This is another example of a professionally coordinated multi-agency plan." She emphasised the importance of calling for help in emergencies.
