Kinsale RNLI Conducts Multi-Agency Search Operation

Kinsale RNLI led a three-and-a-half-hour search operation late Sunday, 21 September. The call came at 9:26 pm when a member of the public alerted the Gardai about a potential emergency near Gully Bridge.

The station's inshore lifeboat, carrying four volunteers, was launched to investigate. They searched from New Bridge to Gully Bridge. The Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 115, was also dispatched, alongside Gardai and Coast Guard units from Oysterhaven and The Old Head.

Conditions included a light north-westerly breeze and strong tides. At 11:00 pm, the search area expanded to Blacks Brewery, where the lifeboat crew employed heat-seeking technology for the first time.

After a comprehensive search and finding no evidence of distress, the operation was called off around 1:00 am.

John O'Mahony, Kinsale RNLI Launch Authority, stated, “This was an extensive search in the hours of darkness... We commend all involved in this joint effort. We encourage anyone in difficulty to call 999 or 112”.

Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) in Ireland Information

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity to save lives at sea in the waters of UK and Ireland. Spending almost 50 hours at sea, the lifeboat stood by the drifting lightship until the proximity to the Daunt Rock forced the coxswain to get alongside and successfully rescue the lightship's crew.

32 Irish lifeboat crew have been lost in rescue missions, including the 15 crew of the Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire) lifeboat which capsized while attempting to rescue the crew of the SS Palme on Christmas Eve 1895.
