Two fishermen were rescued after their fishing boat began sinking south of the Drogheda Bar on Saturday evening.
Clogherhead RNLI launched its Shannon‑class lifeboat at 4.43pm following a Mayday call from Irish Coast Guard.
The lifeboat, skippered by Gerald Sharkey, with mechanic Kevin O’Rourke and crew members Tomás Whelahan, Barry Sharkey and Barbara Kirk, arrived on scene at 5.12pm.
The fishermen had already been pulled on board a nearby vessel by the time the lifeboat arrived. The Coast Guard confirmed they were in good condition.
Clogherhead RNLI escorted the vessel to Port Oriel, where ambulance crews assessed the men.
Once the rescue was complete, the lifeboat returned to station. Shore crew — Brian Boylan, Ray Butterly, Eve Robinson, Shane Doherty, James Kirk and Andy McDonald — oversaw its recovery and refuelling.
Coxswain Gerald Sharkey commented: “It was fortunate for these two casualties that another vessel was in the area when their boat sank and that they were able to be taken on board so quickly.”
