Enniskillen RNLI launched on the evening of 25 April to assist a broken-down cruiser on Lower Lough Erne. The inshore lifeboat Ted Dawber was tasked by Belfast Coastguard shortly after 8 pm.
Conditions were calm, with a north-westerly Force 2 breeze and good visibility as light faded. The volunteer crew located the vessel near marker 51c, where it had suffered an electrical failure. Two people onboard were reported safe and well. The helm decided the safest course of action was to tow the cruiser clear of the navigation channel.
The vessel was brought to a secure mooring near Lough Erne Yacht Club. The occupants were then assisted ashore by the Lough Erne Coastguard team. The lifeboat returned to the station and was made ready for further service.
Speaking after the call-out, helm Paul Keown urged caution. “As we come into the busy season, we ask all water users to carry out regular maintenance and plan their route,” he said. He added, “If you see someone in trouble or are in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.”
