Arklow RNLI’s water safety team, led by Jimmy Myler, has launched an extensive water safety outreach initiative across the coastal communities of Wicklow and North Wexford.
Since April, the team has delivered informative and interactive presentations to a wide range of local primary and secondary schools, including Castletown NS, St John’s NS, St David’s Star of the Sea, Brittas Bay NS, St Mary’s NS Rathdrum, St Joseph’s Templerainey, Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir, Carysfort NS and Glenart College.
These sessions are specifically tailored to sixth-class pupils, aimed at equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to stay safe near or in water through knowing how to recognise potential hazards and learning how to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
The team’s long-term strategy is for their programme to reach young people aged 12 to 22, an important demographic to educate about water safety.
In addition to schools, the team has extended its outreach to local sports clubs, Arklow Girl Guides and local employers including Elavon/US Bank, ensuring that water safety awareness is promoted throughout all areas of community life.
Myler says: “Water safety begins with awareness and that starts in our homes and communities such as schools and clubs.
“When we educate young people to respect the water, to think before they act, and to watch out for their friends, we are doing more than preventing accidents, we are saving lives.
“By embedding this vital education at an early stage, the RNLI hopes to foster a generation that is well-informed and better prepared to make safe decisions in and around water.”
