The 2025 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is under way with intense conditions and early fleet attrition shaping the contest.
Defending champion LawConnect led the fleet out of Sydney Heads at the 1300 AEDT start. By the first hours, Master Lock Comanche held the lead with the New York Yacht Club’s 88‑footer Lucky close behind.
Christian Beck, skipper of LawConnect, said the early position was a “surprise”. He noted the crew had executed a quick spinnaker set that gained precious seconds.
“We saw that — Master Lock Comanche, Palm Beach XI and Lucky were close behind us,” Beck said. “The crew work has been fantastic.”
Lucky (the 2016 Round Ireland race record setter) was a surprise to be right on the leaders two hours into the 628‑nautical‑mile race. There was no mention yet of Frantic in early race reports, with Dublin's Trevor Smyth onboard.
Conditions are already demanding in the Tasman Sea, with big swells and strong southerly winds. Beck reported speeds of about 13 knots and “reasonably rough seas”.

Mechanical failures began to bite. Yendys broke her backstay before the start and was the first withdrawal. Queensland’s Hutchies Yeah Baby retired with a headstay foil issue, and White Noise left with rigging problems. Inukshuk exited with rudder failure.
SHK Scallywag took a 720‑degree penalty turn offshore to avoid a protest after the start. Sumatra briefly stopped to fix hydraulic issues but plans to continue.
Race tracking showed just six nautical miles separating the top six yachts early on: LawConnect, Master Lock Comanche, Palm Beach XI, SHK Scallywag 100, Lucky and Wild Thing 100.
Tributes at sea included rose petals scattered near Bondi Beach for victims of the recent terror attack.
Organisers warn conditions will remain cold, wet and rough as the fleet heads down the New South Wales and Victorian coasts, across Bass Strait and into Storm Bay.
A total of 125 boats remain in the race as of this update. Tracker here
