Lasers dominated the top places in Class 1 of Monkstown Bay Sailing Club's August League, with Brendan Dwyer winning the final race of the series from Shane O'Connell.

Both finished the nine-race series in which two discards were allowed, seven races to count, on 14 points. But on countback, Dwyer had five first places and took the top prise. A Laser 2, sailed by Judy Moynihan and Therese Loesberg, was third overall on 28 points.

26 dinghy sailors took part in the series.

Class 2 was won by Louis O'Neill and Olin Bateman, sailing an RS Feva XL. Second was Jack Ryan racing an Optimist, and third was Harry Coole and Matthew Sheehy in another Feva.

The Monkstown to Crosshaven dinghies race for the RCYC At Home was won by Andrew Kingston of the RCYC sailing his Laser 7. Second were Ethel and Chris Bateman racing an International 14, and third, Liam Duggan in an ILCA 6.

The Junior Fleet winner was Dougie Venner in an Optimist.

The Laser/ILCA Summer Sprint Series resumes this Sunday at Inniscarra Sailing Club on the River Lee, with the final race of the series scheduled for Sunday, September 22, at the RCYC in Crosshaven.

About the ILCA/Laser Dinghy

The ILCA, formerly known as the Laser, is the most produced boat in the world, with 220,000 units built since 1971.

It's easy to see why the single-handed dinghy has won the title of the most widely distributed boat of all time.

The Laser is a one-design dinghy, the hulls being identical but three rigs that can be used according to the size and weight of the sailor.

The class is international, with sailors from 120 countries. The boat has also been an Olympic class since 1996, being both the men's and women's singlehanded dinghy.

Three rigs are recognised by the International Laser Class Association (ILCA):

  • ILCA 4: sail of 4.70m2
  • ILCA 6: sail of 5.76 m2
  • ILCA 7: sail of 7.06 m2
