The International SB20 Class Association says its competitive one-design racing format is proving a launchpad for young sailors seeking international careers.
In a new press release, the class claims that its accessible and highly tactical style offers “a clear path to elite-level sailing.”
According to the SB20s, the boat’s simplicity, coupled with its international regatta circuit, has helped attract rising talent into its fleet.
The class highlights several sailors who have moved from SB20s into Olympic campaigns, international match racing and offshore sailing.
“The SB20 continues to provide a unique and competitive platform for aspiring sailors,” the statement reads.
Recent events, including the SB20 Worlds and Europeans, have featured young helms and crew competing alongside seasoned sailors.
The association cites this mix as a key strength of the class, encouraging skills transfer and mentorship.
SB20s are raced three-up or four-up and are popular in Ireland, with active fleets in Dun Laoghaire and Lough Ree.
While the claims come from the class itself, the message is clear: SB20 sailing is being promoted as more than just a weekend hobby.
