After visiting Dun Laoghaire Harbour last April, the Tall Ship Sorlandet, the oldest full-rigged ship in operation in the world, is moored in Scotsman's Bay again on Friday, October 4th.
Built in 1927 in Kristiansand, Norway, as a training ship for young people in the merchant marine, the Sorlandet has a long and storied history.
At first light, trainees were observed carrying out duties high up in the ship's rigging off Dun Laoghaire and out on the yards.
This remarkable vessel was the first Norwegian training ship to cross the Atlantic in 1933 and, in 1981, was the first tall ship in the world to offer sail training for women.
The Sorlandet also participated in the first international race for tall ships in 1956 and has been a fixture at port festivals in Europe and the USA.
The Sail Training Ship Sorlandet is owned and operated by a non-profit foundation. Its goal is to provide the public with a traditional tall ship experience. From charter cruises to participating in port festivals, the Sorlandet offers a range of opportunities for individuals to join as trainees, regardless of age, gender, or nationality.
