Two Irish citizens are among the 149 passengers on a cruise liner struck by a hantavirus outbreak in the South Atlantic, as The Journal reports.

Three deaths in recent weeks — of a German and two Dutch nationals — have been linked to the MV Hondius, which is en route from Argentina to Cape Verde, with the WHO confirming one case of hantavirus in British national being treated in South Africa.

The virus, which is mainly carried by rodents, can cause severe respiratory illness and even kidney disease.
