The final word on a proposal to extend Galway Harbour is expected by the end of this year, city councillors have been told.
As RTÉ News reports, plans for expanding Galway’s inner harbour have been in the offing for more than a decade, but stalled at EU level when concerns were raised regarding its potential impact on Galway Bay.
The ambitious plans would see the harbour footprint grow by 27 hectares via reclamation from Galway Bay, along with a new deep-water dock. The development is part of a wider strategy for the port to grow its international trade business.
Most recently, An Taisce warned that the risk of flooding events could be increased by the project.
Now that “sufficient” proposals have been made in regard to environmental impact, planners are expected to deliver their verdict by the fourth quarter of this year, according to Port of Galway chief executive Conor O’Dowd.
