After 36 years on call, a senior figure at Dun Laoghaire RNLI has stepped down.
Mark McGibney has retired as Coxswain of the station’s Trent class lifeboat, closing a volunteer career that began in 1989.
Over three and a half decades, he launched 386 times.
During those callouts, 661 people were brought to safety.
The RNLI classed 36 of those rescues as lives saved.
McGibney was appointed Coxswain in 2002.
Alongside that role, he served as Lifeboat Helm, All-Weather Mechanic, Lifeboat Trainer Assessor, First Aider, Shore Crew and Navigator.
Paying tribute, RNLI Regional Business Lead Mike Grocott said: “It is an incredible thing to be able to serve your community as a lifeboat volunteer.”
“Thirty-six years is a proud achievement and there are many people, both locally and further afield, who Mark would have helped during some of their most difficult times,” he said.
“I wish him well in his retirement and thank him for his service to the charity.”
McGibney will be presented with a framed Certificate of Service in recognition of his contribution.
