When Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta's (VDLR) early bird entry deadline passes on March 31st, Ireland's biggest regatta will be on course for its 400-boat fleet, having already reached the 100-boat mark, four months before the first starting gun.
By March 18, the biennial sailing festival had received 98 entries (see table below), and it is the one design dinghy and keelboat fleet that has topped the entry list so far in the 24-class regatta.
The international regatta co-hosted by Dun Laoghaire's waterfront clubs has received entries from Wales, Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, Spain, Hong Kong, the USA and Italy.
The regatta is also part of the new Irish Sea Nation's Cup line up, which features regattas across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Ireland features regattas across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Ireland.
Topping the entry list to date is the Melges 15, which has 15 boats for its inaugural European Championships, being run in tandem with VDLR.
The locally strong Flying Fifteen keelboat class is next with 12, the class has incorporated its East Coast Championships into the Dun Laoghaire four day event.
As Afloat reported recently, VDLR will be the biggest Irish classics regatta of 2025, with seven classic classes competing. There is a suggestion of extending invitations for more to attend, too.
In a bid to widen the regatta, an introductory class offering simple fixed courses has been offered to the slate with the idea to attract boats that do not usually race from nearby, Howth, Greystones, Malahide, Poolbeg and Bray.
And in further innovation, a new VDLR Harbour Racecourse is on the design table, with details to be announced shortly.
