A planning application for an artist’s mural on one of its oil tanks has been backed by Port of Galway harbourmaster Capt Brian Sheridan.
French artist 1seckte, known for graffiti work in Nimes, has designed the proposed mural for a bitumen tank used by Colas Bitumen Emulsions West at the Galway Harbour Enterprise Park.
The application says the mural may depict icons of Galway culture, such as the Long Walk and Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill.
It also aims to highlight Galway city’s association with the sea, the application says.
In a supporting letter, Capt Sheridan says he looks forward to seeing this “thoughtful and vibrant project “brought to life.
“As landlord of the site, the Port is especially pleased to see public art being proposed in a way that engages directly with the surrounding environment and community,”he says, stating that Galway Bay is one of Europe’s “most ecologically important marine areas”.
